2022 US Trip – Day 18 (White Castle on Fremont Street)

    20221005_021500

I don’t get to have White Castle very often, but there’s a new 24 hour outlet on Fremont Street which proved useful to spend a couple of hours in early on in the morning. I really wanted 100 sliders but thought that I would just stick to the Original Slider Meal. Restraint is important.

    20221005_023605

Delicious. White Castle burgers are steamed, which is unusual for a fast food chain, infused with the onions that they’re cooked on. They’re an unusual texture as they’re soft, but I’ve definitely acquired a taste for them. And you get four of the sliders per meal, what a time to be alive and all that…. They were out of Dr. Pepper, but they mentioned that to every customer as they arrived at the till, such is the popularity of this world class drink.

The reviews here are pretty mixed but I like reading the negative ones and imagining how furious the customers must have been.

“I am beyond livid of the poor quality of food I was served!”

“Woman at the register was extremely rude and spaced out. Fire everyone, replace them.”

    “Was so heart broken.”

“The people behind the counter were rude, inconsiderate and hostile!”

“Congratulations White Castle. This is the single worst restaurant I have ever been to.”

I also love reviews that start:

    “Before we were kicked out….”

    Or my favourite comment:

“Acted like I was asking for blood instead of ketchup.”

    20221005_025949

Yeah, because most people get work done at 3am at a White Castle in Las Vegas. No-one cared or noticed though as there are no shortage of odd people on Fremont Street and I thought that I was really quite productive. Bits of the floor were a bit sticky, but the staff seemed polite despite being harassed by rude customers and I liked the variety of entertainment that is almost guaranteed by drunken customers.

    20221005_031203

Most people had gone home by the time I left White Castle. They were sensible.

    20221005_031640

To wake myself up I went on a little walk pleased to be back in Las Vegas. And also looking forward to checking into the hotel.

2022 US Trip – Day 18 (Sleepless in Las Vegas)

    20221004_230753

As my flight had arrived in the early hours on the morning I hadn’t bothered worrying about getting a hotel given that Las Vegas is a truly 24 hour city. This proved challenging for a few casinos during the lockdown as they had to work out how to chain the doors up (some used plywood), as some didn’t have any locking systems since they weren’t meant to ever close or they’d just lost the keys.

    20221004_231420

Everything is big, bright and illuminated in Las Vegas. I’ve mentioned before that the first time I came to Las Vegas I thought that I’d only go once as it’s tacky, tawdry and crude, but then I realised I quite liked those attributes in a city, hence the multiple return visits. This is an exciting city which seems to be constantly evolving in a way I’m not sure is matched elsewhere.

    20221004_233349

Despite having been to the airport several times before I managed to get muddled up and it took me ten minutes to find the bus stop which wasn’t entirely ideal. But, then again, I wasn’t in a hurry. I had bought a seven day public transport ticket which was for the local buses rather than for the more expensive Deuce bus service which is designed for tourists. Fortunately, I was able to use my phone to purchase the ticket, unlike the situation I had encountered in Chicago where they had geoblocked the app. And yes, I’m still going on about that.

    20221004_235112

The bus journey from the airport to the downtown area, the original Las Vegas rather than the main strip, takes around thirty minutes.

    20221005_004600

    Understated as ever.

    20221005_004638

The light displays continues in the early hours of the morning.

    20221005_004800

Live music which isn’t really my thing, but it does undeniably add to the atmosphere.

    20221005_014451

I know, I know. But it was free other than for the tip. I was pleased to discover later on that casinos have widened their beer options somewhat, so there weren’t many more Buds.

    20221005_020752

Woooo… My gambling level wasn’t going to win the casinos much, I only play video poker and the payout is not that far off 100% meaning it’s not particularly costly. And I don’t know how to play the more complex machines anyway, this is much more me. By now I only had a few more hours before the new day was here, but it’s hard to tell in casinos as there are no clocks and everything is brightly lit regardless what time it is.

  • 2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago O’Hare to Las Vegas Harry Reid with Spirit Airlines)

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago O’Hare to Las Vegas Harry Reid with Spirit Airlines)

    20221004_203813

This was the section of my trip that had been messed around a little and so my planned trip by train from Chicago to New Orleans had to be cancelled. That was because a strike was going to be called by staff from the company who own the rail track, meaning that Amtrak were making arrangements to cancel some of their services. They pro-actively cancelled the first train segment and when I asked them on-line they kindly offered to refund the other segments in the itinerary. I was staying at cities such as Carbondale and Jackson, but given the water problems that the latter city has had recently, perhaps that was for the best. That mean I had a gap of one week and after rooting around on-line for some destinations, the cheapest flight was a return from Chicago to Las Vegas with Spirit Airlines. I do like Las Vegas, tacky as it might be, so that’s where I was heading once again.

In the above photo the gate for another destination is still open. A few minutes after it closed a man and his wife (or I assume it was his wife) turned up and realised that their flight details weren’t on the screens. Another customer told them they had missed their flight, but the man wasn’t believing it. He went hunting for staff whilst the wife looked on rather annoyed at the whole arrangement. He wasn’t best pleased at the whole situation when he couldn’t find any staff at the shut gate, so he went through the secure doors, although was soon ushered out. He then made some demands about stopping the plane. They didn’t. His wife then went from annoyed to bloody furious, so there was some entertainment then for the assembled masses who were going to Las Vegas. They trooped off just as the Las Vegas flight was going to board, I had wondered for a moment whether he had deliberately missed his flight so he could go to Sin City instead, but seemingly not.

    20221004_205840

The boarding area isn’t quite as decadent and plush as American Airlines, but everything is functional and clearly signed. I had a cheap seat on the aircraft meaning that I was pretty much the last to board. I hadn’t paid for seat selection, but was pleased that I was given an aisle seat anyway, which is my preferred choice. Incidentally, there are strict limits on luggage and you’re only able to take a small bag on Spirit. However, like all these budget airlines, they seemed entirely happy with my backpack and I was content to put that under the seat in front of me.

    20221004_210222

Safely seated and ready for the off. Note that there was plenty of overhead space available, that’s a result of not allowing any large bags in the cabin without charging for them. It was a smooth boarding arrangement, but budget airlines do like to keep their turnaround times as minimal as posible.

    20221004_212255

As the safety card states, the aircraft was an Airbus A320. I fell asleep for a chunk of the flight as is my usual way, testament though to there being no disruption on board. The flight landed on time, the crew were friendly and the pilots made useful and appropriate announcements. Even with the horrendous exchange rate when I booked this flight, it was still only £50 each way which I thought was very reasonable for a late booking. There was a trolley which went down the aisle (not on its own, crew were pushing it) selling food and drink to customers and although the prices were a little expensive, they were selling a fair amount.

    20221004_230430

It’s always good to be back in Las Vegas. As an aside, I was initially concerned that Spirit were going to fly me to an airport I didn’t know, as instead of seeing McCarran Airport on the ticket as I was used to, it was Pat Reid Airport. This is a change since I last visited the city, they renamed the airport in December 2021 as McCarran had made anti-Semitic and racist statements whilst he was alive and it was thought things needed to be amended. Reid died at the age of 82 just a couple of weeks after the airport renaming, it must be a proud moment to know that you’ve had a major transportation hub named after you.

    2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago O’Hare : Flying With Spirit)

    20221004_200848

Most of my flights in the United States have been with American Airlines and note their clear and comprehensive screens.

    20221004_200855

I was flying Spirit and it was slightly tricky to even find their slightly less decadent screens. But more on this flight shortly…. Oh, the anticipation.

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago O’Hare McDonald’s : We Can Do Six, But Not Four Chicken McNuggets)

    20221004_172031

In the latest series of my irrelevant posts….. But, I was slightly puzzled that McDonald’s could supply six Chicken McNuggets but didn’t have enough stock for four. I’m sure there’s a more complex reason for it, but I decided that I was amused by the situation.

  • 2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago : Chicago L – Blue Line to Airport)

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago : Chicago L – Blue Line to Airport)

    20221004_135027

As mentioned in my previous post, my five days in Chicago had come to an end and I was returning to O’Hare Airport. The Blue Line is a 43 kilometre long service which is the longest on the network and one of two lines in the city which is open and operating for 24 hours per day.

    20221004_135314

I only realised at this point of proceedings that I could enter the station using a contactless card, something which proved suitably convenient as I had just tried to buy a paper ticket and that had failed. As an aside, I applaud the posters to offer the suicidal help and contacts, but that and the whole dank arrangement did make everything feel a little miserable.

    20221004_135440

It’s not easy as first sight to decide whether the wall has an artistic city skyline drawing or just lots of dirty marks.

    20221004_135452

But it’s dirty, all grimy. Although when a transport authority is operating a 24 hour service, I imagine that makes it more challenging to send cleaning crews in to deal with the issues.

    20221004_135602

Fortunately, I only had a wait of around three minutes for the train.

    20221004_135616

Lots of metal screeched to a halt with the sound echoing around the station.

    20221004_135643

The carriage had something of a 1980s feel to it.

    20221004_140959

It’s not the most comfortable metro system that I’ve ever been on with its tough plastic seating.

    20221004_142656

Nor was it the busiest during my trip, although in general this is one of the most used lines on the network.

    20221004_144338

However, it was cheap and efficient, and I was able to take a blurry photo safely back at the metro station at O’Hare Airport. This airport extension to the blue line was opened in 1984 and the transport authority is promising to make the cars rather more luxurious as they continue their roll-out. Having looked at some of these designs, they’ve removed the wood effect and put some cushioning on the seats, a definite improvement on the way.

  • 2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago – Trump Tower and the Chicago L)

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago – Trump Tower and the Chicago L)

    20221004_134049

Walking to the station to get my train to the airport, I meandered by Trump Tower which it’s fair to say has some very impressive views over the Chicago River. It’s not an unattractive building, it’s 92 floors in height and has 339 hotel rooms as well as many floors of residential properties. I had a look to see how much the residential apartments were, although I’d add that was just out of interest as I’d be horrified to have an address of Trump Tower. They’re not that expensive, a studio apartment is from $300,000, although there’s a $675 monthly home owners fee for the services offered to residents, so I imagine that’s a factor given that local property taxes are a similar sum.

    20221004_134431

I’ve been impressed at the Chicago L, or their subway system, since I first visited the city. It’s loud, clanky and feels like a hefty piece of engineering because most of it in the centre is elevated. Indeed, that’s where the nickname the Chicago L came through, the L is shorted for Elevated. It’s been clanking its way around the city centre since 1892 and I’m not sure that it looks much different from when they put it up. Saves digging under city streets I suppose as they did in London. Matters have changed somewhat since the initial construction, much of the now greatly expanded network is now under ground or at least at ground level.

    20221004_134519

Another photo of the L in all its subtlety.

    20221004_134554

And a metro train clanking its way around, which must have annoyed the residents at first floor level (second floor in the US) when they constructed it.

    20221004_135027

This was my stop (or start technically I suppose), Washington Station which is on the Blue Line and goes from the Loop all the way to O’Hare airport. It’s a relatively late build for a station, constructed in 1951 and it’s also connected in with the Red Line.

  • 2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago – Smashburger)

    2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago – Smashburger)

    20221004_134028

En route back to the airport, I had a little pop into the Smashburger at Michigan Avenue in Chicago. I had intended to look at the menu online in advance, but for reasons known only to Smashburger they’ve blocked it to UK phones. The company were purchased by Jollibee in 2015 and they’re planning a rollout in the UK both for their main brand and also for Smashburger, although they haven’t got very far with either yet.

    20221004_123824

The menu board, with customers ordering at the counter and then a staff member brings over the order. The chain are meant to be noted for their craft beer, but one look at the generic rubbish they were serving put me off that idea. I was also just slightly annoyed as I headed to the toilet, which was a hike of the like that JD Wetherspoons require in the UK, before I saw there was a code required which they hadn’t listed on the receipt. I then had to trek back to the counter whilst obviously by now being concerned that my food might be ready. I’d hate to think that I was late for food…..

As a positive though, the dining area was clean and well presented, with power points available which was particularly useful as my phone battery had started to get lower than I would ideally like having spent several hours meandering around Chicago.

    20221004_125223

It took around ten minutes to arrive, so I was back in time. I just had the burger as I thought I’d get a snack at the airport and this was all entirely adequate, but not particularly exceptional. The chicken was more firm than moist, all really quite run of the mill. The highlight of the visit was watching someone drop a cup full of ice all over the floor and they then patiently tried to recover every piece despite the logistical challenges of going under tables to find them. I was impressed at their effort to be complete in their task, as I think I would have left the ones under tables. But, I digress. I wasn’t sure that I could see anything of particular interest in the chain, so I’m content to have ticked it off my list of fast food restaurants without needing to make a return visit.

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago – Lurie Garden)

I really can’t produce a great deal of commentary about plants and trees, but I liked the whole set-up at Lurie Garden in Chicago which is at one end of Millennium Park in the Loop District. This post is nearly entirely just photos, but I was quite taken by the peace and calm in such a busy city environment. There were plenty of places to sit, numerous plants to look at and it feel very much like a public realm where everyone was welcome.

The metal covered building towards the end of these photos is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry, best known to me for his Brain Health Twisted Building in Las Vegas. This park is one of my favourite places in Chicago and I don’t recall it feeling so open and accessible in my previous visits to the city. It’s not all nature though, there’s a car park with over 1,000 spaces here, which I managed to get lost in. Effectively a large section of this area is just a rooftop garden for that car park, but it’d be hard to tell that from these photos.

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago – Northman Beer and Cider Garden)

    20221004_114430

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not one for sitting outside, but this well reviewed craft beer and cider bar is primarily outdoor based and I thought that the views were really quite impressive. Located on the Riverwalk and looking out over Chicago River, this felt suitably on-trend as a location and just a little exciting.

    20221004_114946

My wide angle camera has distorted the shape of my laptop, but this felt a rather comfortable place to work for an hour. The beer was also suitably decadent, the very passable Neighborly Stout from Begyle Brewing who are a local outfit. The downside of all this al fresco drinking is that the beer had to be served in a plastic glass, but it was a creamy and rich stout so it could withstand that drinking vessel.

    20221004_120216

I was glad when someone came to sit there, as that pigeon kept staring at me and I wasn’t sure if he would launch into an attack. I’m pleased to say that he didn’t. They did serve a basic menu of food including some tempting hot dogs, but as usual I was concerned about some aerial attack from a bird wanting to steal it.

    20221004_123202

I was also pleased that the city wasn’t living up to its reputation as the Windy City, it was all peaceful and calm in terms of the weather. All really very lovely.
