2022 US Trip – Day 18 (White Castle on Fremont Street)

    20221005_021500

I don’t get to have White Castle very often, but there’s a new 24 hour outlet on Fremont Street which proved useful to spend a couple of hours in early on in the morning. I really wanted 100 sliders but thought that I would just stick to the Original Slider Meal. Restraint is important.

    20221005_023605

Delicious. White Castle burgers are steamed, which is unusual for a fast food chain, infused with the onions that they’re cooked on. They’re an unusual texture as they’re soft, but I’ve definitely acquired a taste for them. And you get four of the sliders per meal, what a time to be alive and all that…. They were out of Dr. Pepper, but they mentioned that to every customer as they arrived at the till, such is the popularity of this world class drink.

The reviews here are pretty mixed but I like reading the negative ones and imagining how furious the customers must have been.

“I am beyond livid of the poor quality of food I was served!”

“Woman at the register was extremely rude and spaced out. Fire everyone, replace them.”

    “Was so heart broken.”

“The people behind the counter were rude, inconsiderate and hostile!”

“Congratulations White Castle. This is the single worst restaurant I have ever been to.”

I also love reviews that start:

    “Before we were kicked out….”

    Or my favourite comment:

“Acted like I was asking for blood instead of ketchup.”

    20221005_025949

Yeah, because most people get work done at 3am at a White Castle in Las Vegas. No-one cared or noticed though as there are no shortage of odd people on Fremont Street and I thought that I was really quite productive. Bits of the floor were a bit sticky, but the staff seemed polite despite being harassed by rude customers and I liked the variety of entertainment that is almost guaranteed by drunken customers.

    20221005_031203

Most people had gone home by the time I left White Castle. They were sensible.

    20221005_031640

To wake myself up I went on a little walk pleased to be back in Las Vegas. And also looking forward to checking into the hotel.

2022 US Trip – Day 18 (Sleepless in Las Vegas)

    20221004_230753

As my flight had arrived in the early hours on the morning I hadn’t bothered worrying about getting a hotel given that Las Vegas is a truly 24 hour city. This proved challenging for a few casinos during the lockdown as they had to work out how to chain the doors up (some used plywood), as some didn’t have any locking systems since they weren’t meant to ever close or they’d just lost the keys.

    20221004_231420

Everything is big, bright and illuminated in Las Vegas. I’ve mentioned before that the first time I came to Las Vegas I thought that I’d only go once as it’s tacky, tawdry and crude, but then I realised I quite liked those attributes in a city, hence the multiple return visits. This is an exciting city which seems to be constantly evolving in a way I’m not sure is matched elsewhere.

    20221004_233349

Despite having been to the airport several times before I managed to get muddled up and it took me ten minutes to find the bus stop which wasn’t entirely ideal. But, then again, I wasn’t in a hurry. I had bought a seven day public transport ticket which was for the local buses rather than for the more expensive Deuce bus service which is designed for tourists. Fortunately, I was able to use my phone to purchase the ticket, unlike the situation I had encountered in Chicago where they had geoblocked the app. And yes, I’m still going on about that.

    20221004_235112

The bus journey from the airport to the downtown area, the original Las Vegas rather than the main strip, takes around thirty minutes.

    20221005_004600

    Understated as ever.

    20221005_004638

The light displays continues in the early hours of the morning.

    20221005_004800

Live music which isn’t really my thing, but it does undeniably add to the atmosphere.

    20221005_014451

I know, I know. But it was free other than for the tip. I was pleased to discover later on that casinos have widened their beer options somewhat, so there weren’t many more Buds.

    20221005_020752

Woooo… My gambling level wasn’t going to win the casinos much, I only play video poker and the payout is not that far off 100% meaning it’s not particularly costly. And I don’t know how to play the more complex machines anyway, this is much more me. By now I only had a few more hours before the new day was here, but it’s hard to tell in casinos as there are no clocks and everything is brightly lit regardless what time it is.

  • 2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago O’Hare to Las Vegas Harry Reid with Spirit Airlines)

2022 US Trip – Day 17 (Chicago O’Hare to Las Vegas Harry Reid with Spirit Airlines)

    20221004_203813

This was the section of my trip that had been messed around a little and so my planned trip by train from Chicago to New Orleans had to be cancelled. That was because a strike was going to be called by staff from the company who own the rail track, meaning that Amtrak were making arrangements to cancel some of their services. They pro-actively cancelled the first train segment and when I asked them on-line they kindly offered to refund the other segments in the itinerary. I was staying at cities such as Carbondale and Jackson, but given the water problems that the latter city has had recently, perhaps that was for the best. That mean I had a gap of one week and after rooting around on-line for some destinations, the cheapest flight was a return from Chicago to Las Vegas with Spirit Airlines. I do like Las Vegas, tacky as it might be, so that’s where I was heading once again.

In the above photo the gate for another destination is still open. A few minutes after it closed a man and his wife (or I assume it was his wife) turned up and realised that their flight details weren’t on the screens. Another customer told them they had missed their flight, but the man wasn’t believing it. He went hunting for staff whilst the wife looked on rather annoyed at the whole arrangement. He wasn’t best pleased at the whole situation when he couldn’t find any staff at the shut gate, so he went through the secure doors, although was soon ushered out. He then made some demands about stopping the plane. They didn’t. His wife then went from annoyed to bloody furious, so there was some entertainment then for the assembled masses who were going to Las Vegas. They trooped off just as the Las Vegas flight was going to board, I had wondered for a moment whether he had deliberately missed his flight so he could go to Sin City instead, but seemingly not.

    20221004_205840

The boarding area isn’t quite as decadent and plush as American Airlines, but everything is functional and clearly signed. I had a cheap seat on the aircraft meaning that I was pretty much the last to board. I hadn’t paid for seat selection, but was pleased that I was given an aisle seat anyway, which is my preferred choice. Incidentally, there are strict limits on luggage and you’re only able to take a small bag on Spirit. However, like all these budget airlines, they seemed entirely happy with my backpack and I was content to put that under the seat in front of me.

    20221004_210222

Safely seated and ready for the off. Note that there was plenty of overhead space available, that’s a result of not allowing any large bags in the cabin without charging for them. It was a smooth boarding arrangement, but budget airlines do like to keep their turnaround times as minimal as posible.

    20221004_212255

As the safety card states, the aircraft was an Airbus A320. I fell asleep for a chunk of the flight as is my usual way, testament though to there being no disruption on board. The flight landed on time, the crew were friendly and the pilots made useful and appropriate announcements. Even with the horrendous exchange rate when I booked this flight, it was still only £50 each way which I thought was very reasonable for a late booking. There was a trolley which went down the aisle (not on its own, crew were pushing it) selling food and drink to customers and although the prices were a little expensive, they were selling a fair amount.

    20221004_230430

It’s always good to be back in Las Vegas. As an aside, I was initially concerned that Spirit were going to fly me to an airport I didn’t know, as instead of seeing McCarran Airport on the ticket as I was used to, it was Pat Reid Airport. This is a change since I last visited the city, they renamed the airport in December 2021 as McCarran had made anti-Semitic and racist statements whilst he was alive and it was thought things needed to be amended. Reid died at the age of 82 just a couple of weeks after the airport renaming, it must be a proud moment to know that you’ve had a major transportation hub named after you.

  • Las Vegas – High Roller Observation Wheel (Unlimited Drink)

Las Vegas – High Roller Observation Wheel (Unlimited Drink)

This is the 170-metre tall Observation Wheel in Las Vegas, more formally known as the High Roller. It opened in 2014 and is the tallest ferris wheel in the world, as everything in Las Vegas has to be the biggest.

My visit here was back in 2015 and there were some special offers on, including a ticket which included a barman and unlimited drinks. So, I accidentally got that ticket.

There’s a little exhibition area to browse whilst waiting to board the wheel. There’s only one observation capsule that has the bar set-up, so there’s a different boarding process to the other capsules.

This is the set-up, a barman who was friendly and welcoming, all very fitting for the United States and Las Vegas.

    The drinks set-up.

Back in 2015, I was going through a cider stage, although I’d add that I mean decent real ciders and not Strongbow or anything. I didn’t expect that they would have a stock of scrumpy type drinks in Las Vegas, but they did have this Angry Orchard and this was a more than suitable drink to start with.

I then switched to spirits….. The whole arrangement was all generous and well-managed, the barman was fast serving, personable and was clearly enjoying his work environment. I can think of worse places to be a barman. This meant that everyone had more drink available than they could realistically comfortably drink, unless they had a real ability to binge drink I suppose.

Some photos above of the wheel itself.

And some photos of the views. Unfortunately, the quality of these isn’t great as these were from my phone camera back in 2015 and Google Photos has squished the image a little.

As an observation wheel, it went smoothly and quickly, although perhaps the alcohol helped with that process. There were views over the entirety of Las Vegas, and into the desert beyond. There weren’t too many people in the capsule and everyone there was well mannered, so the environment was all rather amenable. Very lovely.

  • Las Vegas – Carl’s Jr

    Las Vegas – Carl’s Jr

It took me until 2015 to visit a Carl’s Jr, one of the largest fast-food chains in the United States. They were founded in the 1940s and the Jr. bit of their name is because the owners had already established Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue restaurant, and this new venture was something a little smaller. They started their new venture in Anaheim, which is one of the few parts of Los Angeles I haven’t been to, with the exception of sitting on board a coach in the coach station going between LA and Las Vegas. But I don’t think that counts.

The chain’s first expansion outside of California was to Las Vegas, and although it was in a different location within the city, it’s where I visited them in Sin City. Today, the chain also has a sister company, called Hardee’s, which is to all intents and purposes pretty much the same.

I’m not entirely sure about the burgers here, as in, they were fine, but they tasted pretty much the same as Burger King, so there’s little unique about them. There’s something about chains like Five Guys, White Castle and In-n-Out that allows their burgers to have a taste that is pretty distinctive to them. The fries are much better, crispy, firm, not greasy and sufficiently salty. Like nearly everywhere in the United States, the service was efficient and friendly, with the restaurant being clean and organised.

So, it’s all entirely acceptable, but as so often, there might be better independently-run burger restaurants available…….

  • Las Vegas – An Unfortunate Incident

Las Vegas – An Unfortunate Incident

This is Fremont Street, in downtown Las Vegas, back in 2015. It’s a street which is neither understated nor quiet, with much going on along its now pedestrianised length. And perhaps, sometimes people forget what is the made-up entertainment of Las Vegas and what is reality.

Seeing a crowd, and liking drama, I had to interfere quickly to see what was going on. What was actually happening is that someone was standing on a tall building nearby and threatening to jump. The emergency services were already there in force and were trying to contain the situation.

Now, I’m not really into human suffering, blood and terror, so I decided to take a photo only of the people taking photos and then I left. To go to Banger Brewing actually, but that’s a different matter. I certainly didn’t want to hear the crowd’s reactions to every twist and turn of this drama, let alone witness something even more dreadful. I have no idea what the outcome was, but I’m still moderately surprised by just how many people wanted to watch this unfold.

  • Las Vegas – Viva Vision

    Las Vegas – Viva Vision

I still haven’t found the photos that I was looking for, but I’ve found these, from 2015. I’ve worked my way around many hotels in Las Vegas over the years, but my first visit was to downtown Las Vegas and the shuttle dropped me off at my hotel just as the light display started.

And, as light displays go, this was very Las Vegas. Covering a huge area that once had over 2 million lightbulbs and has since been replaced with 12 million LED lamps, it’s an audio-visual experience that is as understated as Las Vegas.

I have better photos of this, but as these are the ones I’ve found, they’ll do.

And here’s a video of what it can look like, with the show changing frequently. They’ve upgraded the set-up over the last year, so I’ll need to go back to Las Vegas yet again to check it out.

  • Las Vegas – Brain Health Twisted Building

Las Vegas – Brain Health Twisted Building

I took the above photos in 2015 and I think I have some more recent ones which are of a better quality, but since this isn’t a photo competition these can do. The building, located at 888 W. Bonneville Avenue, is officially named the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and it opened in May 2010. The $70 million building certainly makes a design statement and was designed by Frank Gehry, noted for his work on the Guggenheim Museum.

The building behind the intriguing frontage is a fully functional health building that investigates brain illnesses, particularly in relation to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntingtons and Multiple Sclerosis. As a work of art though, I think it’s a quite magnificent building.

  • Las Vegas – Las Vegas Sign

Las Vegas – Las Vegas Sign

I may not have yet been entirely successful in my hunt for my photos of San Francisco, but I’ve found another tranche of photos from Las Vegas that I’d forgotten about.

The Las Vegas sign, located at the southern end of Las Vegas, near McCarran Airport. On this point, I’m aware that most of Las Vegas isn’t in Las Vegas, it’s in the unincorporated town of Paradise, but that’s for another post. This sign has been here since 1959 and it was designed by Betty Willis (1923-2015) who didn’t copyright the sign and instead gave it to the city.

As the decades went by, this sign became more iconic and more tourists wanted to look at it. This was a problem, as the sign was in the middle of a road and if I’m being honest, the Americans do sometimes forget about pedestrians in their pursuit of new roads to build. But, in 2008 the authorities thought something should be done and they made it easier to get to the sign with the installation of a traffic crossing and a nearby bus stop. This made it even more popular and it has now become a safe site to visit for tourists, and many of them do.

    The reverse of the sign.

I always look awkward in photos, it’s better when I stand much further away and even better when I stand the other side of the camera.

The sign is visible early on in this video from the 1960s.

  • Las Vegas – United Church of Bacon

Las Vegas – United Church of Bacon

Seen in Las Vegas back in 2015, certainly noticeable and controversial….

The United Church of Bacon is a parody church, a group set up to promote atheism which Wikipedia tells me was established in Penn Jillette’s house (from Penn and Teller).
