Bremen – Übersee Museum (Storage Collection)

[I originally posted this in April 2018 but have reposted it to fix some broken image links]

This museum, literally The Museum of Overseas, is located near to the central railway station and I had expected my visit to take around an hour. However, the museum was rather larger than I had realised, so that became a visit of nearer to four hours.

This post just relates to the storage area they have in a separate building, which is attached via a walkway. This part of the museum was over three floors, each with multiple areas and rooms. I’m not sure that many other visitors to the museum knew about this section, since I didn’t see one other person in the storage area.

Snakes. So many snakes. Thousands of them, and they’re all dead. Which are much less scary.

Display after display…. I think it’s an excellent idea, the National Railway Museum in York does something similar. It means that substantial parts of the collection are visible to the public, whilst still having properly curated displays in the main museum.

The city’s central railway station, located just north of the old town area.

    20180428_091344

This building dates to 1886, impressive entrance hall. The only slight downside is that the station isn’t very clean, litter and graffiti are rather predominant in places.

This train must have had around a thousand cars on. I don’t know what make of car they are, but I’ve never seen this in Ipswich.

This is a fourteenth century church in the Schnoor district of Bremen and it replaced a thirteenth century building that had been on the same site. It was run by Franciscan monks, but was closed down following the Reformation and turned into a mental asylum and hospital.

    20180427_145640

The tall nave, with the interior being bright and relatively free of decoration. There was a plan in the early nineteenth century to turn the nave into a warehouse and just use the choir area for worship, but this was narrowly avoided.

    20180427_145818

There were many of these panels which were set into the walls.

    20180427_145926

The organ, which dates to 1965. The building had been damaged during the Second World War and the roof destroyed, but it was repaired and in 1992 there was reconstruction of the interior to extend the crypt.

Nothing too exciting from the exterior, but the reviews were good for this bierhaus and brewery, so it looked worth a little visit. That was after Google had sent me to the wrong end of the street, a rare error from Google Maps…

    20180427_151404

The entrance reminded me of the start of a medieval theme park ride…..

    20180427_151957

It was happy hour, 0.4 litres for just €2.50. Bargain! I decided that one wasn’t enough to really test the beer fully though, so I had to try a few….

    20180427_151612

The pub makes its own beers which were perfectly pleasant, although perhaps a little light.

    20180427_151616

There was lots of character in the bar, which was much busier by the time I left.

    20180427_152639

I thought that I’d better test the food and the fish and chips looked like a rather good option. The batter was soft, but it had lots of flavour and the tartare sauce complemented the fish beautifully. The chips had some paprika on, and had a crispy exterior and nice and fluffy interior. Rather lovely!

Bremen – Kunsthalle Bremen (Repair of the Illustrations)

[I originally posted this in April 2018 but I’ve reposted it to fix some broken image links]

The Kunsthalle has a large display of their illustrations, of which many have been restored over the last four years. There was a special display which showed how some of the illustrations had been repaired, which in itself was rather well put together. Many of the illustrations have been lost during the Second World War, although the museum is still trying to get some of the back. Unfortunately some of them also became quite damaged, although the museum has decided to keep what they have, so everything is being preserved.

I have no idea about some of these, but some of these looked quite impressive. The animal one, which looks like something out of Bev’s front room, is from the Musicians of Bremen folk tale.

There were on the floor in the modern art section on the ground floor. I was unsure whether they were exhibits or things left there by a member of staff. Either way, they seemed out of place and pointless.

This is the first of lots of posts about my four-hour long visit to the Kunsthalle, a fascinating art gallery which was well presented, spacious and most of all, interesting. They didn’t burden themselves with too much pointless modern art, which also pleased me.

    20180426_115902

This work is by James Turrell and is on three floors, so visitors have to peer up or down, depending on which floor they’re on. I have no idea what it’s all meant to mean, but it looked interesting and there are stars on the ground floor.

    20180426_122620

The artwork is mentioned on Turrell’s web-site at http://archive.jamesturrell.com/artwork/above-between-below/, but I’m still none the wiser about what it all means.

It’s a burger in pita bread. I only went in McDonald’s as it was advertised and I’d never had one. I rather struggled to make the photo look as though it was beautifully presented, but that’s primarily because it wasn’t. It looked a complete mess. However, it tasted fine, although I’m not sure it’ll become an international best-seller.

Located in Lloyd Passage, a 250-metre shopping street, is Bremen’s hall of fame. Lucky individuals get to put their hands in plaster so that a cast can be made and then inserted into the floor with a plaque. It felt just like being back in Hollywood, California….

    20180426_133222

Michael Stich, the tennis player. He was the only one that I had heard of and also the first photo that I took. I was looking forwards to other famous names and although I don’t deny that the others aren’t famous, it’s markedly less exciting when I don’t have a bloody clue who they are.
