There are better photos online of Sovereign House being demolished, but here are a few I managed whilst walking past yesterday. Being away in Poland has meant that I’ve missed some of the more exciting parts, and the building is now coming down quickly. I hadn’t realised that being away would require quite so much catching up on the destruction of Norwich.

These photos are perhaps a little meaningless with the context from others in the series, but Gildengate House has been taken down with some speed since my last post of a few days ago. It’s just Sovereign House, the building in the background, that’s left now.

It still seems slightly strange to walk by the Anglia Square demolition site and see Gildengate House be taken apart bit by bit each day. There was a time in the 1990s that this was used to store the city archives after the central library caught fire, before they were moved to their current site at Norfolk County Hall. Anyway, some more photos……

Just a few extra photos to show the progress made since my previous post of the day before…..

I haven’t posted much about the Anglia Square demolition recently as not much has happened. However, as I was walking by today there was finally some more action. And here are some photos of all the excitement.

I haven’t posted any progress photos from the Anglia Square demolition over recent weeks as there hasn’t been much demolition going on. The big challenge now is taking down the 1960s modernised Sovereign House building which has the problem of being asbestos ridden. They have made a little more progress taking down these buildings at the very rear of the site, by Pitt Street, which I hadn’t realised at first were part of the overall project.

Anyway, just some photos….

There’s really not much of excitement visible at Anglia Square now, certainly not without me going on the top deck of a bus to see over the top of the hoarding that has now been put up. It’s a shame that they didn’t put some plastic screens up so people could see in, that seems quite common at many sites and would have likely interested a fair number of people here. Anyway, these are the only photos that I could take of the site.

So, the shopping centre at Anglia Square is pretty much all gone now. There are some walls that are still coming down, but it’s nearly entirely rubble and there’s no evidence at all of the Greggs that once stood here. It’ll now be the turn of the larger buildings to be demolished, they present different challenges and may well require specialist asbestos removing handling as well.

Everything continues to come down at some pace now, the central core of the buildings around Anglia Square are mostly down and there’s a lot of rubble everywhere.

I was walking by the other side of the Anglia Square development yesterday and realised I could see the cathedral from Edward Street for the first time now the demolition is progressing. And the whole lot is now coming steadily down, so there might be posts every couple of days now to excite and delight my two readers.
