  • The Ideal Walking and Running Ratio

The Ideal Walking and Running Ratio

As far as I’m concerned, this is the perfect ratio of walking to running. Running is just too tiring….

  • Walking – Swanton Abbott and Lamas

Walking – Swanton Abbott and Lamas

Just photos from tonight’s walk, an area I knew quite well in parts. We also visited the exterior of three churches, so more on those in later posts. The walk was 12.3 miles, walked in just over 4 hours, and it was nice to finish later into the evening and it was still light. Unfortunately, it goes downhill from here with regards to that for the rest of the year.

Fortunately, despite the sign, we didn’t see any of the adders.

South Walsham and Burlingham Green Walk Photos

    No photo description available.

Rob and me decided to go for a short meander this afternoon to an area where I’ve walked near to, but I haven’t been to South Walsham and Burlingham Green for some years. It started off hot in the Norfolk sun, before fortunately cooling down a little. Four churches visited today, or at least the exterior of them, photos of those in separate posts.

  • Wherryman’s Way Near Claxton

    Wherryman’s Way Near Claxton

Just photos from the Wherryman’s Way, or routes just off it, from last week. This is the area near to Claxton and the other side of the river bank from Cantley. I’ll be doing the entirety of the Wherryman’s Way in a couple of weeks, so there might be quite a few posts about that coming up…..

$20,000 to Walk the Appalachian Trail and Drink Beer

The chance to walk a long-distance trail in the United States and drink beer, but only US citizens can apply. I’ve heard of worse ideas…..

  • Walking – Treasures on the Boudicca Way

Walking – Treasures on the Boudicca Way

Located towards the latter part of the Boudicca Way, if walking towards Norwich, is this little finds box that has been placed on the edge of a farmer’s field. It always seems to contain new items of interest every time I go by it, it’s an interesting concept that perhaps could be done elsewhere.

OK, so it’s unlikely to interest the British Museum, but it shows how much stuff can be found in fields. And, for reasons unknown, it now appears to have attracted some feathers.

  • Walking – Norwich to Caistor St Edmund

Walking – Norwich to Caistor St Edmund

Nothing particularly exciting here (so no photos of Greggs, aggressive sheep or landslides), just photos from my first walk in the last couple of months which has been over 10 miles. One of many over the coming months due to the preparing for the LDWA 100 next year…..

This was from central Norwich, along the river-bank in Trowse, through Arminghall Henge, to Caistor St Edmund and Venta Icenorum, before coming back along the Boudicca Way. But, more about Caistor St Edmund and Venta Icenorum in other posts.

  • Hike Norfolk Awards 2019

    Hike Norfolk Awards 2019

I had a slight problem this year when writing the text for the Hike Norfolk awards, which was primarily that I had forgotten much of the material I could have used, as I hadn’t blogged sufficiently. 2019 was the second year that we had given out awards, but the first time that we’ve actually gone to the trouble of having actual awards to give out, similar to the Oscars. I say “we”, but I really mean Steve went to the trouble of getting them.

Anyway, there were 39 people at the Christmas meal, and there would have 40 if Gordon had turned up, who managed to hear the announcement of the below awards.

    BEST DRESSED WALKER : Clare

QUOTE OF THE YEAR : Dave

BRAVEST MEMBER OF THE YEAR : Sarah L

MOST RAUCOUS WALKER : Sarah H

    MOST MISCHIEVOUS WALKER : Susanna

NICEST PERSON OF THE YEAR : Łukasz

MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM OF THE YEAR LOST : Richard

ANIMAL LOVER OF THE YEAR : Clive

BEARD OF THE YEAR : Poppy (winner of the public vote)

CANOEISTS OF THE YEAR : Dylan and Leon

The text of the awards ceremony speech is far too gossipy for this blog and is just a little beyond the pale, so I had better not post it here. Gordon’s solicitors are never far away and he might pursue a very expensive legal case against me…….

Photos are available on social media and the Hike Norfolk WhatsApp group, but above is one without too many faces, including one of my two apprentices who handed out the trophies….

  • Walking Dangers

From Backpacker Magazine, showing the variety of dangers when walking. Admittedly this is a US magazine, but it reminds me how brave I am to go out into the countryside, leaving the bright lights of the city….

  • Ireland – Kinvara – Merriman Restaurant

We were staying in the Merriman hotel in Kinvara and so we thought that it would be convenient to eat our evening meal there. We weren’t entirely sure how good the food would be, but the reviews were reassuringly content and the restaurant was relatively busy which seemed a positive sign.

I opted for the special main course of chicken kiev and it was better than I had anticipated. It was served at the appropriate hot temperature and the chicken was tender and moist, with plenty of flavour. The chips were fluffy inside and the salad added some texture and extra taste.

The French style lemon tart was also on the specials menu and I deliberately avoided the desserts selection that were on the main menu. I think that I made the right decision, as those ordering the blueberry cheesecake seemed a little disappointed with their choice. The lemon had a refreshing and sharp flavour and the pastry was slightly firm and had a pleasant taste.

I noticed this when paying and it reminded me that I haven’t seen blue Aftershock on a pub’s back bar for some time. I must have been going to the wrong pubs and I suppose it’s not really very compatible with craft beer.

The service during the meal was efficient and engaging, although the staff member made a bit of a mess of explaining to Susanna what the Irish stew was like. He ended up saying it was watery and putting her off to the extent that she ordered something else. I think some people enjoyed their meals more than others, but I was suitably impressed and it all exceeded my initial slightly limited expectations for the restaurant.
