Turkey/Georgia/Armenia Trip 2026 : Day 14 (Yerevan – Cascade)

This whole arrangement is known as the Cascade and it was conceived by architect Alexander Tamanyan in the 1920s and brought to life decades later by Jim Torosyan. There are 572 steps to the top, but they were too icy and so we took the escalators.

During warmer weather, this is an impressive water feature. The whole thing was meant to be a mixture of Soviet grandeur and local Armenian decoration, with working starting in the 1970s. It wasn’t though completed and then other things happened, not least the Soviets leaving, so it was finally finished in the early 2000s.

Jonathan waving, he was still being far too positive and jovial for me, but I didn’t say anything.

We had to hope to see Mount Ararat from the top, but it was too misty.

Inside the Cascade is the Cafesjian Museum of Art, which is something that I’ll likely visit if I get back to Yerevan, which I suspect is likely as it’s a growing hub for Wizz Air. And, fine as the views were from the top, it would be nice to see Mount Ararat.
